MAGISTRATE’S COURT

GREYMOUTH SITTING. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was hold at Grey mouth, yesterday, before Messrs M. J. Fogarty, and F. W. Shallcrass, J’s.P. Appearing on remand from Tuesday last, Francis Thomas Kennedy was charged with, on November 23, obtain" ing £] 5s from Gibbs’ Motors by fraud. Detective Murch asked for a remand, stating that another and similar cjiarge would be preferred against Kennedy. He also stated that when Kennedy was arrested, be had in his possession a number of articles of clothing, that the police had reason to bblieve might have been stolen. Accused had refused to make any statement about the clothing, and the police would therefore ask for a reamnd, to enable inquiries to be made. Accused, stated that he had now been in custody for a week, and asked that bail be allowed. Detective Murch stated that the police opposed bail. The accused stated that he was on the West Coast on business, and had an invention, which he was endeavouring to sell. He also stated that, if bail were granted, he would guarantee to comply with the conditions of- the Court. He would make' a statement about the clothing at th 4 right time and place. Mr Shallcrass: There is only the one charge against the accused at present? Detective Much: Yes. Accused was remanded until Tuesday, December 8, bail being fixed at self £SO, and one surety of £SO. William Pattinson apepared on a charge of stealing three Christmas cards, valued at 6/-, the property of John Sittleton, at Rewanui, on or about October 25. Senior-Sergeant Roach said that the cards had been left in a tunnel at Rewanui, by the owner, one wet day. He had sent a man to collect them, and the man had, while carrying the parcel, been invited into a hut for a drink, by Pattinson and some others. While he had been supplied with liquor there, the cards had gone astray. Pattnson pleaded guilty, stating that at the time of the theft he had been drunk, and had not known that lie was doing. Senior-Sergeant Roach said that a parcel of the cards had been missing, and only the three mentioned in the charge had been recovered. Pattinson was fined £l, and ordered to pay 2/6 witness’s expenses. An'order was made for the return of the cards.
