BABY’S DEATH

GISBORNE, November 20.

A. sad occurrence' was revealed on an inquest being held to-day on the death of the nine-months-old child, Peter Denton, who had been boarded out to a Mrs Lister, who js licensed under the Chlid Welfare Act.

Mrs Lister gave evidfenbe that on Sunday the child was crying, while witness and friends were having tea, and she gave him a bottle of Easton’s syrup bills, to play with. Tile pills Were in a bottle with a screw'top, and witness said she tightened the screw top. Soon after she saw pills lying on the floor near the baby. The child was. rushed to the hospital, but died ten minutes after admission.

Medical evidence was given that each pill had contained one sixtyfourth of a grain of strychnine. Death was consistent with strychnine poisoning, but until analysis was made it is ompossible to say how many pills the child had taken. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
