Green, the President of the American Federation- of Labour, declared to-day that unemployment had reached a -new peak in industry, ‘ -with th'e Trade- Union -figures showing 20 per cent, workless, and he said that if it continues to increase at ithe present rate, there would be 7,500,000 persons unemployed by January. He added that, as yet, the relief funds collected were totally , inadequate. The ) so-called “Community Chest 1 Drive” had provided 36 Trillion dollars, of which all but eleven millions were needed for ‘“normal expenses. A member of the Relief Organisation estimated the wage losses in industry during the last year at eleven billion dollars, and that this is being reflected in the starvation and undernourishment of the worker’s family.
