SHOOTING ACCIDENT
A serious accident happened on the sea beach near the abattoirs yesterday afternoon, resulting in Charles Nathan, staying at the Dominion Hdtel, receiving a gunshot in the instep which was badly shattered.
It appears that two men, Charles Nathan and Richard Mace Durham left town yesterday afternoon carrying one gun. They went "as far as Three Mile and then returned along the beach doing some shooting at rabbits. They then sat down on the beach for a smoke, where Nathan cleaned the gun, a double barrel breech loader, pulling a pullthrough, and laid the gun on the sand. After about three-quarters of an hour ■they decided to go home. Durham asked if the gun was loaded and Natlnm replied no. Durham then went to pick up the gun, the muzzle of winch was about a foot away from Nathan, and in doing so apparently touched the trigger and the left hand barrel exploded, the charge entering Nathan's instep at close range and causing a very serious wound. Apparently after cleaning the gun Nathan again ibaded it, but neither men had any knowledge of having done so. The injured man was one once removed Westland Hospital for treatment.
