NOVEL COCKTAIL “ SETS.”

DISTINGUISHED NATIONAL FIGURES LONDON, October 1. Now that the cocktail has become so popular, hostesses are seeking novel and at the same time decorative ‘‘sets’’ in which to keep the necessary ingredients. One of the most original of the sets produced so far takes the form of a series of China figures which are paint ed to represent people characteristic of the different countries in which the various ingredients are produced. Thus, for the gin, there is a Dutchman; for the vodka, a long-coated Russian ; for the vermouth, a lovely Italian peasant girl ; for the rum, a negro from the plantations of Jamaica ; for the absinthe, a French gendarme; for the whisky, a Scotsman complete with kilt and bagpipes ; and for the essentially English orange bitters, John Bull. These figures, arranged in one or more rows on a shelf, give a very picturesque appearance to the room, and are at hand when required. In addition to acquiring sets such as these, some hostesses are having cockta’l bars installed in their houses. Any tiny nook—one lady made use of a former coal cellar!-—can be used for this purpose. In the miniature room is set up a bar, behind which are arrayed bottles, shakers, glasses, and pewter—all of vhi; h g ves an effect rather like that of a parlour in a country inn. Where space allows, this resemblance may be further enhanced by adding a selection of cigars, cigarettes, churchwarden pipes, and even a little gate-legged table and a few wheel-backed chairs.
