VERY SERIOUS POSITION.
CHINESE ARMIES MASSING
OPEN WARFARE PREDICTED
(United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.)
SHANGHAI, November 25. Fighting has broken out between the Chinese and Japanese troops in the vicinity of Mukden. Yesterday, an engagement was fought between Chuliuho and Hsin Mintum, and continued throughout the night. Details are lacking apart from the fact that the Japanese were attacked by Chinese troops in ambush. The worst fears, however, are now realised by foreign observers, indicating a predicted battle on a major scale in the near future, unless the Chinese troops cease massing in the vicinity of Chin Chow. A Tokio message delivered here states that unless the Chinese troops around Chin Chow withdraw from the neutral' zone established, following the withdrawal' of Chang 'Sueh Liang’s troops within the great . wall, Japan -may be forced to make a formal declaration of war with the gravest possibilities.
Japanese military officials declared that, failing the withdrawal of Chinese troops “actual war” may break out. Chiang Ivai Shek’s departure northwards, it is feared, may precipitate the reinforcing of the Japanese garrisons at Pei Ping, Tientsin, and Shan Haikuan. A Nanking message states that all parts of the country are seething with; anxiety, and demanding the Government to declare war. Four special trains left Shanghai to-day for Nanking, carrying, over 10,000 students, all deci'anffg thenwillingness to fight, but insisting that •Chiang Kai Shek should lead them.
