N.S.W. POLITICS

UPPER HOUSE ISSUE.

(Australian Press Association.)

LONDON, November 24

The “Sun-Herald” says it understands that, the appointment of the new Legislative Councillors ill New South Wales is the result of the compromise. It says Premier Lang had at first demanded fifty new appointments, to which Sir P. Game was inflexibly opposed. Mr Lang then asked the Dominions’ Office to intervene. In this he was not successful. He then suggested thirty-five appointments as a basis of negotiation. Sir P. Game finally agreed to twenty-five new members. He also insisted on the right of scrutinising the names of Mr Lang’s nominees. It is understood, the paper says, that he rejected several on whom Mr Lang had at first insisted, but he finally yielded after there had been a London discussion.

Commenting on the appointments, Hon. Mr 'Willis. the Agent-General for New South Wales said that important brokers had expressed the opinion that there will be no immediate reactions on Australian stocks, but investors were natural fy, very watchful. If Mr Lang acted reasonably, then Australia’s credit ought to maintain its rfecent improvement. After Mr Willis had asserted that his efforts had always been directed to a mutual adjustment of the LangGame difficulties, an Australian Press Association representative asked him what was likely 'to happen -if Mr Lang asked for another batch of appointments to the Upper House. Mr Willis .expressed the opinion that 'Sir Philip Game would again oblige him.
