SOLO FLIGHT AT SIXTEEN
AUCKLAND, November 18
Wallace Badham, aged 16 years, made his first solo flight at the Mancere aerodrome on Friday. ” After saving the necessary money, Badham left his home at Kare Kare, West Coast, last August and stayed at the clublWse at, Mangere for some time’ receiving lessons each day from the instructor, Flight-Lieutenant D. M. Allan. After he had completed a period of instruction his training was interrupted, and he went home. He returned to the aerodrome on Wednesday, and after taking one or two lessons, principally in landing he flew solo on Friday morning, flying by himself for 15 minutes, and making good landings. The new pilot hopes to extend his stay at the aerodrome until he has completed the five hours’ solo flying necessary before he can sit or his A license test. 1 Prior to Badham’s performance, the youngest pilot in the club to fl.v solo was G. M. Owen, who made his first solo flight on January 25, 1930 at the age of 17 years, and qualified tor his A license four years later. No licenses are issued to pilots under 17 years of age
