COUNTRY SCHOOLS

STATEMENT BY HON. MASTERS.

(By Telegraph—Per Press A ssociation j

WELLINGTON, November 20

Having had statements brought under liis notice to the effect that there is to be a wholesale closing of small country schools, Hon. R. Masters made 'the following., statement;— m. “It is not intended that 'there should be any wholesale closing of small schools, but 'in a number of instances the only teacher procurable is an uncertifica'ted girl, with no training. The education of pupils can be carried on much more efficiently, and incidentally much more economically, by means of correspondence- schools. Grade 0 schools cost the country £l4 5s per head and a correspondence school can do 'the work for about £6 per head.

In a number of instances it was found beneficial to tile children to close small schools and convey the children to larger schools.

Before any school is closed, the circumstances of the case will be carefullyconsidered and action will be taken' only where the result will be the provision of better education for the children.’’
