BROTHERS’ BURGLARIES. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 16. Two brothers, Bernard Cbarle 8 Cole 27 and William Noel Cole, 24, were sentenced to-day to three years’ hard labour for a series of burglaries. They were arrested under sensational circumstances in a lonely house near
Swanson. Counsel said that poverty was the explanation of the offences. Justice Herdinan said it was the worst case of systematic burglary for a long time. The sentences would begin at the expiration of the present term of twelve months which both are serving. STOWAWAYS. INVERCARGILL, November 16. Fifteen stowaways were found on the Wninui, which arrived at Bluff from Melbourne early this morning. They appeared in th? Magistrate's Court this afternoon, and were charged with stowing away and with landing in New Zealand without a permit. All of them pleaded guilty to the charge of stowing away, but seven of the men, who said that they had been born in New Zealand, pleaded not guilty to the latter charge. The iemainder pleaded guilty. Senior Sergeant Packer said that these men had come to New Zealand in the hope of obtaining employment with Wirtlrs Circus. The Magistrate ordered all l of the offenders to pay the amount of the fare, £6 ,-5.5, plus expenses, or in default undergo thirty days’ imprisonment. The Australians were ordered to be deported, and the alleged New Zealanders were remanded until Wednesday morning.
