CRICKET

SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR. VICTORIA 284. SPRINGBOKS BOWL WELL. (Australian Press Association.) MELBOURNE, November 6. The weather to-day was warm and the wicket was fairly fast, for the cricket match,. South Africa versus Victoria. Wodfull won the toss. The visitors omitted Crown, Balaskas, Dalton and Van Der Merwe. The Victorian batsmen proceeded steadily against an attack which, although varied, ivas not dangerous. The stumping of Ponsford was a particularly smart piece of work by Cameron. Vincent, a left handed, showed skill in varying his pace, but none of the howlers were able to turn the ball much on the perfect wicket.

Woodfull took two hour's to reach fifty. The bowling was by no means collared, although McMillan, had an expensive over or two. The batsmen had still to fight for runs after tea, the howlers being well oil the spot,

atnd the fieldsmen keen. Balaskas, who acted as .substitute for Viljoen, who had a touch of the sun, fielded brilliantly on the boundary.

Woodfull, at 97, gave a chattel of stumping oh the leg side off Quinn. He reached the century in 229 minutes, Wood.fuli’3 full tiniQ was 2*o minutes, and he made 121, hitting eight boundaries, The visitors registered a good performance in dismissing a strong Victorian hatting side for a moderate total of 284. The South African howling has created a good impression. When the inning’s closed for 284, the Visitors' batted ftir twelve nvijnutes, and at .stumps had on seven runs for no wickets. The attendance was eight thousand, and the receipts £3OO. Scores:— VICTORIA—First Innings.
