HAMILTON MURDER
SMITH COMMITTED FOR TRIAL

HAMILTON, November 4
The trial of Arthur Walter Smith, aged 50 years, a painter, charged with the wilful murder of his wife, Lois Alexandra Smith, aged 29, on October 3rd, opened at Hamilton Magistrate’s ■Court to-day. 1 In a statement to the police the prisoner admitted that while his wife was sleeping in bed, he had leaned, over her to put out 'the candle, when an irresistible feeling came over him •’’andf ' after plunging a knife into her throaty he attempted to cut his own throat. He .stated that he had been having a hard struggle for existence, and the worry of it was cruel. ; ■Evidence was given by F. A. Delamore, solicitor, who had known the accused over 40 years, that he - had never known the prisoner to do a dishonest thing, ' ■ Smith was committed for trial.
