INCREASING RETAIL BUSINESS

A local business man who-, has just returned lrom Wellington has an interesting comment to make upon business activity in the capital city. Des_ pi to the slump, most of the Retail Firms are spending more money to get business than ever before. All of them are more or less. now down to bedrock with their overhead, and the policy is to build on new foundations which have been established. Advertising has been incrSasted by some of the shops* and it was rattier remarkable to note the results win

followed some of the particularly big, and bright efforts. AlcKenzie’s, Woolworth’s and Alacduff’s, who are big advertisers have their shops jammed with people on Fridays whilst others, equally big bargain shops who don’t advertise, are comparatively neglected. Tile same ‘busy-ness’ seems to exist with the other big advertisers like James Smith, D.1.C., Ivirkcaldies and one or two others. I don’t believe one firm would consider cutting down its advertising one iota with competition so keen as it is at present. All this advertising is very significant and JL, wonder that local tradesmen do not. show a similar enterprise—because iu due proportion the expense •is no greater.
