AFFRAY ON FARM
PARTY ATTACK MAN. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) HAWERA, November 4. As the result of an affray on an Olningai farm, at about ten p.m., on October 17th, when Lawrence Ivilney, a faring hand was knocked unconscious and was in the hospital for seven days, Walter Wallace was fined £lO and ordered to pay £0 15s expenses by Mr Salmon, S.M., to-day, on a charge of having assaulted Ivilney. Five youths, Reginald Harding, Stewart Savage, Janies O’Sh'ea and Peter O’Shea au t ] Ronnie Tapp, were each fined £2 for aiding and abetting Wallace. ‘ :
7 A charge against a sixth youth, George Reid, of having aided and abetted in the offence, was adjourned.
Kitney was employed by G. A. Williams, farmer, and with, .two-others —- was living in a tent on the property acquired by Williams, but which Wallace had previously owned. Wallace had declined to leave, disputing the sale by his creditors, and he believed he was justified in resisting possession. Wallace’s party, allegedly, let down the tent at night, , and ■ when .. Kitney went to help, the assaults occurred.
The Magistrate considered Wallace to be the prime mover in the offence. It was almost a case for imprisonment and had Walhxce been ousted by law, he would have been gaoled. Addressing the others, Air Salmon said: “You bos's went there armed with sticks, and a man was injured. There were six of you to attack one man at night, which was a very unBritish action, and very disgraceful.”
