BRITISH EAST AFRICA
STEPS FOR CLOSER SETTLEMENT (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 2. The report of a Joint Select Committee appointed to consider the reports already made by Commissions on the subject of closer union in East Africa, and Government conclusions thereon, was published to-day. The Joint Committee sat under the chairmanship of Lord Onslow. The Committee concludes that the present is not the time for taking any far-reaching step towards formal un. ion. Nevertheless, outside all question of i’ornjal union, the Committee considers there is a very real field for co-operation and co-ordination, which can be effected in economic and scientific services without any political or constitutional union involving the creation of a super structure ever the three Governments and Legislatures. The heads of such co-operation suggested are: Transport, customs duties, and administration, scientific and technical services, and posts and telegraphs. The Committee affirms its belief .in the value of white settlement as an important element in the progress of East Africa.
