i “Arthur literally sacrificed himseii for the miners,” said Sir Ben Turner, in paiyng a tribute to the late Secretary of the British Miners’ Federation, Mr A. J. Cook, whose death has just occurred. The late Mr Cook had continued working almost till the end, despite having a serious tliroai affection. The latter had been causing him intense pain. < •
Trade union leaders and the coal mine owners join in praising. Mr Cook’s courage, sincerity "and selfsacrifice.
Mr Cook began- life as a ploughboy. He had a radical farmer for an employer, who made him read Cobden and Bright’s speeches. He became a Baptist lay preacher at the age ot sixteen years. He was expelled from the Baptist Church for preaching Marsden doctrines.
Mr Ccok worked i ndergr. unj f r twenty years in the mines of South Wales. He was twice imprisoned for participating in strikes.
