FIRE BRIGADES
HOKITIKA TEAM CHAMPIONS In. connection with the Fire-Brig-ades Competitions held on Saturday a.t Westport under .the auspice® of the West Coast Fire Brigades Association, the following report has been contributed. Conditions were .of the .worst-, Westport evidently specialising in wet weather, as this is the third time that the Demo, has been held under wet conditions, in Westport but not withstanding -this,- the 1 events 'passed off successfully, the only event not staged being the Five Men Reel; which was run on Sunday morning, before a good attendance of the public. Hokitika's team, once again • proved themselves the champions of the Coast, as, out of/ five events competed t for, they were successful in winning two, namely the Two Men Coupling,.and the Five Men Reel, and running second in the One Man, Three Men Disabled and the Five Men, Carry, thus .running right up to form,- and proving conclusively that by constant practice and training, any team can reach *its objective—■ the top of the ladder. -A ; We extend hearty -congratulations to our neighbouring towns, Ross, who annexed the Three Men' Event; Kurnara, the Baby Rescue and second in-the-.Five Men Reel, and Otira - ‘who ' landed the One Man, by defeating the redoubtable "Slip’ 1 Williams. Our sister town, Grey mouth, evidently did not run tip to expectations, as they ran Reefton very close ‘ for the wooden. spoon,"; Secretary ’Walton saving the day by winning the race for Gold Star Men. However, we : trust that next year, when the Demo, is being held in Hokitika that they will he able Vo extend this year’s champions, the Hokitika' team.
In connection with the above there is on view at Mr L. S. Ross’ Sports Depot, the valuable trophies won by the Hokitika team, namely— I The Rose Bowl, Thompson Shield, Grogan Shield, and the Rmsell Champion Shield for most points in Demo., and two gold medals for the winners of the Two Men Event. It speaks for/itself; the points. gained.' The Hokitika* secured 59 points out of a possible;' 67: points," Westport falling:' 'second.' place .with 45 points, thus, placing the local team champions for the year 1931-1933,. •' ' ; ■ ‘ \ ,;.r \
