STATEMENT BY MR FORBES.
WELLINGTON,! October 30,
In a, statement to the\House to-day, the Prime Minister said the enrolling of electors tinder the provisions of- the Electoral Act was preceeding satisfactorily. The latest returns furnished to the department showed that 65,371 persons had applied for registration on the supplementary rolls for all- electoral • districts ; 33,877 : electors had transferred from one district to another, ‘ and' 15,492 electors had changed addresses within 7 the electoral districts for which they were registered. These figures clearly indicated 'that* the electors were fully alive to their obligations under the Electoral Act. Every person who failed to register was liable to a penalty on conviction. 1 In view of the circumstances and the fact that registration was compulsory it was not considered necessary or advisable to i employ Government officers to make a house to house visitation in city electorates for the purpose of enrolling electors.
