DRUNKEN DRIVER

WANGANUI, October 27

Guidio Cutelli, a well-known business man, was fined £SO and h:s license was cancelled for three years, for being drunk in charge of a car.

SOLICITOR FINED

NEW PLYMOUTH, October 28. Pleading guilty, William Henry Armstrong, solicitor, of Inglewood, was fined a minimum of £SO for failing to have his it rust accounts audited within four months of the end of the financial year. JURY DISAGREE. CHRISTCHURCH, October 29. The jury failed to reach an agreement in the trial in the Supreme Court yesterday of Cyril Turnbull Gibbin on charges of breaking and entering tbe warehouse of Guthrre Bowron and Co., on August 5, and committing theft; of stealing paint brushes and other goods to the value of £25.135; and of receiving those goods knowing them to have been ■stolen. Accused pleaded not guilty, Mr Justice Adams presided. No evidence was called for the defence. The jury retired at 3.45 p.m., and returned at 8.40 p.m., with the announcement that it had .failed to agree. A new, trial was ordered to take place at tae end of the session.

FRAUD CHARGE

AUCKLAND. October 29

“1 won’t sentence him to-day, in the mood I am jn. I might give him too much,” said Magistrate Hunt, in remanding until to-morrow, Archie Victor Rudge, 41, salesman, who appeared on charges of obtaining £SO from a widow by fraud, stealing a watch and chain, and attempting to obtain £SO from a boarder in her house.

Accused was arrested in, and extradited from Sydney, on a charge of stealing a promissory note for £BO. After hearing the evidence, Mr Hunt said the accused was a heartless rogue, who robbed a struggling widow' who actually borrowed money to lend to him.

Accused’s counsel said the woman was prepared to let him go free if lie made restitution.

Mr Humf,: Do you think I would let a blackguard like that go free? He then made the statement quoted in the opening sentence.
