FATAL ACCIDENT

FURTHER PARTICULARS Further particulars of the fatality, on the road irear Barrytown where Mr Charles Rugg lost his life on Sunday showed that though the accident occurred on that afternoon it was not till 1 p.m. next day that Airs luigg and her child were seen. Mrs Rugg is suffering fiom shock but lucki.y her leg was not broken as stated. Constable Houston, of Runanga, who on being informed, proceeded toils the scene of the fatality, found that-yM the car had gone clean over the ciiff r the deceased’s b xly being found in the vehicle at the foot of the cliff near the sea. From the marks of the car it was evident that it had travelled almost to tlie blow of tlie hill, and that an attempt was apparently made by the deceased to change gears, in which lie was not successful, with the result that the car.had evidently run backwards and toppled off the road.- Open- 1 ing the door, probably, Mrs Rugg and the boy were thrown cut of the vehicle the door of which was found to have been torn off, but deceased remained in the car and was carried to the rocky beach below. Tlie car was extensively damaged. ' A native of Diiimanstown, the late Mr Rugg was a son of Mr and Mrs Charles Rugg, of Hornby,, and former- . ly of Greymouth. He 'was'forty years of age. Formerly employed by the Railway Department as a clerk, he Into joined the business of carrier, /carried on by his father in Greymouth, and when Mr Rugg, senr. retired in 1925, the deceased took over and very successfully conducted the business to the time of his death. He was wellknown and highly respected resident of Greymouth and will be greatly missed by in»nv, and especially the travelling public. He survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Charles Rugg, of Hornby, and two ’sisters, Mrs. 7s. Wearn, of Auckland, and Mrs A. Stevenson, of Hornby.
