Rainger, living at Arney Road, Remuera, had a narrow escape from death early this morning. Half suffocated and with' the crackle ' of bitoing tlmbhr in his ears, he managed to reach, the ground by means of a fire escape. There , was no one else in the house at the timq. The house was. badly 'gutted. Tile top storey being destroyed and the rear portion of the-lower floor extensively damaged. ' Weak' from the effects of smoke, Rainger ' misled his footing when neai the , bottom of the escape, and fell eight'feet to the ground, with the wind ■ knocked ct of him, it was several minutes before he was able to pick himself up and give an alarm by telephone from a neighbouring house. The house was a ten-roomed one. (It was insured for £2,250 in the North [British and Mercantile Insurance Co. Ltd. There was a cover of between i£4oo and £SOO on the 'contents. A number of valuable sporting trophies ■were destroyed.
