CHINA AND JAPAN

GENEVA NEGOTIATIONS. I United Press Association.—By Electno Telegraph.—Copyright.! RUGBY, October 20. Although the Manchurian . problem still remains acute, hopes are centred upon the conversations which M. Brjand and Lord Reading had yesterday, and are continuing to-day with the Japanese and Chinese delegates at Geneva. It is understood that suggestions for a solution made by the League Council were put to them, and discussed. In Manchuria itself, iho situation apparently remains unchanged, but it at least-does not seem to have deteriorated. In Geneva, the tension during the last few days has been somewhat relieved, owing to the nature of the prepent conversations. One satisfactory (levolupiimnffi is that the misunderstanding, regarding, the presence of the United States representative on the League Council, has been removed, and Japan, while reserving the view on the legal and constitutional point involved, agreed to the presence of the American representative. U.S.S. CO-OPERATION. (Received this day at 9.25 a.m) WASHINGTON. October 21. The State Department officials denied to-day that the United States was playing a lone hand in the efforts to pacify Manchuria, as had been hinted in reports from Geneva. An offniial said that the United States was cooperating in every way that* it felt it could with the League of Nations.
