REMOTE RUSSIA

INTERESTING EXPERIENCES, (United Press Association.—By ElectricTelegraph.—Copyright.) (Received this day at 12.25. p.m.y CONDON 1 , October 15. Interviewed by the Australian Press on his return from an interesting journey to the remote Kara Sea region, northern Russia, which the Ozarist regime closed to foreigners, Matters Yasee declares the allegations concerning slavery, brutality and starvation in the timber camps there are nonsense. He lived among Russian timber work. 'MI JB*k ; l ers in the town, of Igarka, built three years ago, and shared a hut with aviators, river pilots and lined up with others for food, which was a normal proCejlurej ..riot because there was' a shortage but there was no waitresses. Everyone helps himself. Matters added:: —“l lined up .with a police chief ahead and a charwoman behind. All. got the same good, plentiful food as myself. Everybody in the town, from the highest to the lowest, was treated -equally in regard to food. Russia is an over large country for anyone to sum up in sweeping, terms, hut in the important area I covered, I saw no such thing as slavery. Everybody, especially the rising generation is well fed and contented.

Igarka is probably the most extraordinary to win in the world. Three years ago, bears and wolves roamed the district. The town was built with a two feet layer of moss, under which in summer time, when one walks in the streets, one hears water squelching beneath. I was allowed to do as I liked.

An interpreter, who was a personal friend; assisted me. In the area visited, the people w,ere prosperous and hard working, butf|iTterly.'cut off from the world. I did lipt. know' an election was on until I waygoing home, and got within wireleskftrange of Norway. Apart from ’;- the ships- crews. I was •probably the first Englishman who had ever visited Kara Sea area.
