THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.
J THE BUDGET. j | Direct and personal experience of taxation has been a liberal education for the people and, with that in mind, it may be hoped that members will debate Mr Stewart’s proposals in a sober and practical spirit. Their or> iginal duty was to guard citizens against the exaction® of the State and they should try to recapture that primary purpose. It is a strange reversal that to-day it is the Government that is struggling to repulse the spendthrift demands of the Commons. If the latter appreciated the chastened temper of the majority of the people, they would join hands with the Government in assisting rather than hindering the movement towards economy and stricter standards of expenditure. —The Dominion.
