Mr M Neil mis tiaced the ice firover 300 feet, and lias secured a claim of 40 acres covering the area. To test the value of the reef iie lias taken out three tons of ore from various faces. This was carried first on the prospectors’ ' hacks' then by pack and finally by trucks to the Thames, where it has. yielded 12oz 13dwt of melted gold, valued at £3 per oz. Assays by the Tlnunes School of .Mines, taken from tile 3-ton parcel, show an average* value of £l2/14-/8 per ton. This is certified by the’ director of the school, Mr IT. Crawford. In an interview. Mr McNeil sain that there was unlimited ore in the place where he took his parcel, the only drawback being transport. He visited the Thames, last week and made arrangements for a small battery to bo taken to bis claim. He does not purpose to put the mine on the market, the interests being confined to liis own family. At a meeting of the Coromandel Chamber of Commerce last Monday, reference was made to Air McNeil’s good property, and it was decided to request the Minister of Mines to extend assistance to Coromandel prospectors as it was highly probable thas other discoveries of gold would be made.
