SAVINGS BANK: POSITION. (Australian Press Association.) CANBERRA, October 14. An important announcement on the 'Commonwealth Government's intentions concerning assistance to the State Government Savings Bank will be made by Mr Scullin shortly. Replying in the House to suggestions of relieving depositors, the Prime Minister said he intended to make the earliest announcement. VICTORIAN POLITICS. MELBOURNE, October 14. The leader of the Opposition, Mr Argyle, moved the adjournment of the House to discuss the Ministry’s refusal to grant more money for a local commission on British settlers. r \ he motion was agreed to by 28 to 6 votes, the Government being defeated. It is not expected that the Government will take the defeat as vital.
FIJI POLITICS. SUVA, October 14. The Legislative Council opened to-day. The Governor’s Speech refuses the popular demand for a reduction of salaries. It balances the Budget by a small retrenchment of the staffs and the curtailing of public works, and steamer subsidies. It is expected that the elected members at the next meeting on Monday will advocate a reduction of civil servants’ salaries. No increased,taxation is proposed.
