FIRE AT HANMER
hospital building. HANMER, October 8. An outbreak of fire late yesterday afternoon caused considerable damage in what is known as No. 3 building which was used as part of the women’s hospital by the Health Department before the present building was . erected. Latterly it has been used ns quarters for the female laundry stall, | whose effects were saved, although partly damaged by fire and smoke. A I certain amount of bedroom furniture was saved. j The building is about twenty-five years old and was first used as a board-ing-house under the name of Glenalvon,” conducted by Mr and Mrs Jas. Ashton. Although the fire had a. good hold, it was soon under control, the actual damage being mostly confined to the kit-"hen quarters, where it oiu n "- ated. Nobody was in the house at the time and there was a fire in the lut-r-TlgP The building is one of a block of .three in close proximity to each other and but for the w T ork of the brigade, under Superintendent Malaquin, there was a danger of the whole three buildings being destroyed.
