VALEDICTORY

DR. HAYES FAREWELLED. There was a representative gathering of citizens at Preston’s Tea Rooms yesterday afternoon for the purpose oi bidding good bye to Dr Hayes, Superintendent of Sea "View Mental Hospital who is under transfer to Nelson, and who is leaving next week. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) made an apology for the absence of Messrs H. Newman, D. J. lvvans, Ede and Keenan. , Afternoon tea was partaken ol and then Mr Perry said that the somewhat informal gathering they holding had been arranged hurriedly, but it was felt that they could not let Dr Hayes go away without some expression of the esteem and respect in which he was held by the community. He was going away with bur best wishes but our chief regret is that he has received promotion that necessitated his departure. Whenever he goes Dr Hayes will have the'r best wishes as he had shown during Its stay a true sense of citizenship, and had won their esteem and affection. His references to Dr Hayes were also equally applicable to Mrs Hayes and he uould ask, the Dr. to convey those sentiments to Mrs Hayes. Messrs W. J. Hutler, J. J. Breeze,,H. M. Coulson, Dr Willson, Dr Teicheimann and Mr W. E. Williams all joined in voicing appreciation of excellent services rendered and good fellowship extended by Dr Hayes and the best wishes for the future of Dr and Mrs Hayes. Dr Hayes returned, thanks, to the several speakers for their very kind references to his actions and services. He stated that had it not been for the hearty co-operation of the citizens of Hokitika many of the improvements effected at. the Mental Hospital could not have been carried out. He greatly aprwpoiatff Die generous references to Mrs Hayes, which he would convey to ■ her and he knew she would also be very pleased at their kindly expressions of goodwill. He again 'thanked them for their kind expressions for the‘future. The Mayor then asked Dr Hayes to pecept a fountain pen as a small memento of the many friends he was fearing in Hokitika. Dr Hayes thanked the Mayor for the gift. The proceedings then closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and c’heers for Dr and Mrs Hayes.
