LATE LOCALS.
Billy Murphy, the only New Zealand boxer who ever won a world’s champ onship title, had a very lucky escape from certain death at Auckland. He was walking down Queen’s wharf when a packing case about sft square fell from the crane unloading it from the liner Jtangitiki and crashed on to the wharf on the spot over which he had passed barely ten seconds before. The case was smashed, and its contents were unrecognisable as the crockery they had once been. Pieces of wood and china were thrown in all directions, but those standing near were not hurt.
In the Wellington Zoo there is a pair of golden-throated eagles, which have been in captivity for a number of years. This winter some variety was lent their somewhat dull life by the female takmg it into her head to build a nest, a somewhat draughty affair composed of small branches of trees, a few raupo leaves, ■arranged"crosswise on • a sawn-otf tree stump about 12ft high. In due course the reason for this act became apparent, and the bird began to sit ; but a great gale came one night, and in its fury blew the nest over, and smashed the only egg. So the eagles sit aloft in dismal isolation once more.
The premises of Blackwell’s Ltd., Kaiapoi, drapers and general storekeepers, and of Eric Gray, grocer, both situated in the same building, were entered by burglars on Friday night. An unsuccessful attempt was. made to blow Blackwell’s safe. A charge was placed in the lock but evidently back-fired, for a number of floor rugs which had been placed in front of the safe to deaden the sound were d’ound extensively damaged. Blackwell’s Ltd., cannot trace any loss of stock. Mr Gray estimates that he has lost about £lO worth of tobacco and cigarettes.
