BANK FAILURES

IN NORTH AMERICA, (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) MONTREAL, October 5. Two prominent financial houses, the brokerage firm of Dougall and Cowans, and the investment bankers, Greenshields and Company, failed- To-day. The brokerage house was one of the largest in the Dominion, with branches in several cities. NEW YORK, October 6. Due to continued heavy withdrawals, the number of banks closed throughout the country increased to-day with the closure of two in Philadelphia, four in Washington County, Pennsylvania, one at Williams Port, Maryland ; one at Spartanburg, South Carolina; one at Canton, Ohio. The closing of two of the Pennsylvania firms followed the suicide of a Director attached to both banks. VANCOUVER, October 6. There is now a whisper that several of the largest American bankers aru inextricably involved in the German collapse, and that before Wall Street recovers, big failures are inevitable.
