LIBERAL FEDERATION
AGAINST PROPOSED TARIFFS. (United Press Association.—By Electric Tel egraph.—Copyright.) (Received this day at 9.25 a.m) LONDON, October 3. A four hours meeting of the Executive of the National Liberal Federation, Women’s Federation and League ot Young Liberals, heard statements from Messrs Samuel and Sinclair, whereafter they resolutioned endorsing the leaders resistance to the precipitation of an unnecessary, dangerous elec, tion, declaring; the proposed general tariff would have the most unhappy effect on the electorates, increasing the cost of living following wage cuts ami taxation, and adding that they adhere us firmly as ever to free trade as the only basis enabling the restoration of national, international prosperity. SIR JOHN SIMON. LONDON, October 4. The game of formula hunting had continued long enough, said Sir J. Simon, when informed of the Federation's resolution. The country’s best course is to put confidence in the Prime iMnister. That’s'th© course I mean to follow. I have the best tea* sons f for knowing' this is the view of other Liberal Commoners. We are Immediately forming nn organisation therefore. -
Viscount Grey has now made it plain that h© does not support air Lloyd George’s uncompromising opposition to the election, and insists that economy and sound finance should bo the paramount issue. If the tariff wer© made the issue of tile election it would degenerate into a party fight, and the national cause' would he jeopardised.; The “Sunday Times” hears that Mr Lloyd George is seriously contemplating resigning from the Liberal Leadership.
