TORRENTIAL RAIN
HOUSES FLOODED AT PORIRUA. WELLINGTON, October 2. Heavy rain this morning flooded tile low-lying portions of Porirua and entered some of Oie Houses. The TiLain Bay road was under water in places and parts of the Nguhauranga Gorge road were eaten away by water unable to escape through overloaded culverts. Many creeks overflowed their hanks. The rainfall in Porirua remained steady throughout the night, but at about 6 o’clock this morning it oegan to come down in torrents, and it is believed that there was a cloudburst in the Paekakariki Hills. People began to lift linoleums from the floors and to move furniture to places of safety. In some houses furniture was to oe seen stacked in heaps, while the water was inches deep on the floor. The water soon cleared when the rain shtcKened.
Early this morning tv ten-foot returning wall with the large part o fa builtup section collapsed on to the footpath at Brooklyn.
