GERMAN VISITOR COMPLAINS
REQUIRED TO PAY £lO DEPOSIT
AUCKLAND, September 28
Al complaint of unfair treatment in his being required to deposit £lO before being allowed to enter New Zealand was made by Mr P. Muller, a retired banker of Berlin, who arrived by the Tofua.
Mr Muller said that he and yMrs Muller had travelled across half the world, and this was the first occasion on which they had had to pay a deposit before entering a country, It was their first visit to New Zealand and this requirement had not made a good impression.
“Wo came to spend money, - and we And that wo have to deposit some before reaching land,” said Mr Muller. Mr J. Mclntosh, Collector of Customs, said that the requirement was quite a usual one in the case of foreign visitors who had no permit to land. There was an average of one or two visitors so placed on practically every vessel coming to (New Zealand. The money was- refunded when the visitor left the country.
