STRANGE DISEASE
THREE DEATHS.
ON BOARD STEAMER FROM SOLOMON ISLANDS. (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 28. Three deaths were caused by a strange disease aboard the steamer “Montaro,” which arrived at Sydney from the Solomon Islands. Two natives and Father O’Donoghue, Parish Priest of Castlemain (Victoria) became suddenly ill and died. Practically every passenger and member of the crew suffered, but the captain was not oftected and was able to cany on with .a few members of the crew. . ■ An officer stated that the disease had swept through the Solomon Islands". The symptoms resembled those of fever auj influenza. The throat and tongue became swollen and the patient experienced a difficulty in breathing. When the ship reached a, cooler climate the disease disappeared.
