(By Telegraph — VerPress Association) •WELLINGTON, September 24. The control of Rugby among Maori I players came in for adverse criticism .... at a meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby . : 7 | Union. ' * . . ,-» v - Mr Kingi Tahiwi, representative of \j the Maori Rugby Board on the Committee, admitted that the‘Board was too unwieldy and required' a thorough
oveihauling. ' ' ", The Committee decided to inform the Maori Advisory Rugby Board , that a sub-committee of the New Zealand Union was prepared to confer at y any time arranged. 77 The Hawkes Bay and Southland Unions complained that in arranging the Maori matches, _ the Maori Ad- , . visory Board communicated direct! with Maori players under the control ? Of those Unions,' ; and 'the Unions ask- ,‘~Y' ed that instructions be given for the discontinuance bf the practice. . 7 . k The Chairman (Mr- Beans: "One' • thing Is clear. The best Maori team was not picked to meet the Australians.” ( , Mr A. 0; Kitto agreed with that view.' “We sent a Maori team’ on tour through the South Island,” he said, “with the object of enabling, yit to acquire combination for the match against Australia, but it came as a gieat surprise to find that only eight of the players were chosen in the team which played Australia.” -.JAj Mr Dean said the selection of Bell of Southland in the Maori team was 7 absurd, especially as he did not take , part in a game at Invercargill this season. ' , . Mr Tahiwi said that Bell had been selected on the form -shown, in the Pi inee of Wales Cup matches. Exception was also taken to the fact that the Maori Adv : sory Rugby Board had not adhered to the agreement that no player beyond halfcastcs. be regarded as Maori. On the motion of Mr Dean, it was to inform the Maori Advisory Board, that in future all oommuriica- ,’ 7 tions concerning the of players required for Maori matches must go through the Unions to which the players belong.
PORTER’S RETURN; THE SCRUM QUESTION. SYDNEY, September 24f Mr Cliff Torter .(the N.Z. Rugby crack) arrived here on ""board the Orsova, en route to New Zealand, after a business trip to England. Wakefield, the former English captain, and. he found; himself in complete agreement that something should be done to make for uniformity in Rugby throughout the world, especially in regard to the scrum. The point arose as to whether New Zealand should give way on the t-wo-three-tvm formation. Mr Porter adds: V 1 said I would be willing to help in this regard as soon as it was proved three men were better than two. RUGBY LEAGUE. TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA.
