THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.

IN MANCHURIA

With the Southern Manchurian railway in Japanese hands—the Government owns half the shares and the

company has many interests other than the actual railway—Japan is in a very favourable position to push her economic interests in the country, and it is primarily to guard the line that Japanese troops are maintained there. South Manchuria has become in effect a Japanese sphere of influence in which, over and over again, Japan has claimed a privileged 'position, though the Japanese Government has disclaimed any desire for annexation. The present trouble may provide Japan with an excuse for strengthening her hold on Manchuria, a development that could not be prevented by China, but would not be forgotten. —Auckland Star.
