OYSTER SEASON

REQUEST FOR EXTENSION. (By Telegraph— Per tress Association) WELLINGTON, September. 22. An urgent request that the oy'stei season should he extended this year on the grounds that oysters ar e valuable food for persons suffering from postinfluenza debility, has been received ;by the Marine Department to-day from an Auckland doctor. The oyster beus around the coast of the Dominion are owned by the Marine Department, which controls the picking and sale of the oysters to the fish dealers. The work fairly expensive organisation, sdvtßat when the supplies have been depleted below a ceitain point, it is not economical to ke'ep the season open. The picking season for the northern beds closed last Saturday, although further time is allowed for the present stocks to be disposed of. The southern season is to close at the end of the month. In view of the circumstances, it is considered unlikely that the season will be extended.
