DANGEROUS SPEED
RECORD-BREAKING TRIP. REPETITION TO BE COSTLY. AUCKLAND, September 21. Kenm.tr Wilkins n, of C-inbridge, was fined £2O at the Otahuliu Court to-day for dangerous driving while on a rei ol d-breaking trip from . Auckland to Wellington. , A Highways Board inspector, who prosecuted, said that certain times were quoted by Wilkinson in a booklet which he published, and when questioned h e said that every statement was true. According to the booklet, the car took twenty-one minutes to travel from Auckland to Papakura, which represented a speed of 54 miles an hour.. Defendant left Auckland at four on Easter Tuesday morning. Defendant’s counsel denied that his speed endangered anyone. The inspector told the Magistrate that the Highways Board wanted the practice stopped, as others had tried to heat-defendant’s record. Counsel: But they failed.
The Alagistrate said that the full penalty was £IOO, and a repetition of the offence would he very costly to any offender. He. would like to see the authorities take proceedings in regard to all sections of the road between Auckland and 'Wellington.. .. - - ‘
