After an exciting chase on bicycles, Harold Charles Matin was arrested at Stratford and later appeared in trie Police Court charged with a series of robberies, the value of the goods stolen totalling nearly £21)0. Accused pleaded guilty to 22 charges of breaking and entering and theft, of theft and of forgery, the list beginning in 192(5, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
During the hearing of the case accused stood in the box showing no signs of emotion, only smiling when witnesses identified belongings which, had in some cases, been lost to them for months and even years. Among the stolen goods were suit-cases, gold wristlet watches, a barometer, cutlery, gramophone records, women’s handbags, a powder puff, clothing, a bicycle, fancy goods, cigarettes, tobacco, sugar, tea, a shopping bag, and posts which’ accused had been attempting to steal when he was arrested.
Th e goods were recovered from accused’s' home.
