BAKERS’ HOURS
LACK OF UNIFORMITY. (By Teleyruph —Per i'ress Association J WELLINGTON, September 22. The Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Dominion dispute is engaging the attention of the Arbitration Court to-day. The workers are asking for new conditions as to the hours of work, time of starting, and increased wages. One of the chief points in the dispute is the time of starting. The masters want them to start at times which best suit particular buisnesses. The workers want the time fixed definitely at 4 a.m. > r Ah;>, The masters claim that the bulk of their output goes to shops for retail over the counter, and that delivery must be early. Home made bakers are objecting to being brought under the same award as that covering the big machine bakeries. The masters argue that the price of bread is being kept up. by award provisions. They say the full effect of improvement of plant machinery and methods by employers could not be gained, the public thereby suffering in the price of bread. Tile hearing is proceeding.
