THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.

COST OF PEACE. The cost of the League of Nations this year has beem officially estimated at £1,360,000, which is contributed by fifty-five nations. Great Britain’s share is '£135,000, or a little under a penny per head. Preparation for war costs Britain over two pounds'per head. In France armaments represent 22 per cent, oi the Budget, in Britain 14 per cent., in Italy 25 per cent., and in the United States 16 per cent. The United States and France together spend approximately? on military expenditure two hundred times as much as the whole cost of the League. Bead'ness for war costs Great Britain about £175 a minute, as against about five shillings a minute for the League. These are comparisons which perhaps some critics of League expenditure do not weigh sufficiently.
