CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD
The Canterbury Board of Education met at Christchurch on Friday,- when there were present Messrs G. TV. Armitage (chairman), H. J. Bignell, TV. P. Spencer, J. TV. Preen, Thompson, R. Wild, TV. Johnson, TV. A. Banks, S. Smith, and J. G. Gow. . Appointments Committee. The Appointments Committee reported that tlie following appointments were confirmed: —Kaikoura Suburban, Mi’ C. Miller (head teacher); Pigeon Bay, Miss R. F. Murphy (sole teacher) ; Temuka, Miss F. F,. O’Connor (assistant mistress); TVakanui, Miss E. G. Lawrv (sole teacher, transfer). The following resignations were accepted Christchurch West, Mr Hi J. Maekie (inspector, Native Schools); Carew, Miss S. M. TVatson (soie teaclier); Chorlton, Miss H. M, Pearson (sole teacher); Lincoln, Miss B. M. Taylor (assistant mistress); Marshland, Miss S. R. Voice (assistant mistress) ; Moonlight, Mrs E. Hawker (sole teacher); Runanga, Miss.E. Delany (assistant mistress); Shirley, Mr J. F. Williams (assistant master).
A telegram was received from the Director asking the Board to refrain from entering into any fresh contracts or renewals.
. A report was received from the subcommittee deputed to investigate the conveyance services of the district. The report was adopted, and it was further resolved that the Department be advised of the action being taken; that the Department be asked to depute a responsible financial officer to meet the Board at a special meeting in November with a view to finalisintr arrangements for the future, and that all contractors also be advised.
Tt was resolved that Mr Wild ho asked to collect local information regarding the services at Hokitika, Kanieri. Koiterangi, Kokatahi, TVataroa and Harihori schools.
Correspondence was received from the TVataroa Committee and contractor (Mr Barrowman) regarding the conveyance service. It was resolved that as the arrangement with Mr Barrowman had been entered into by the Committee, the Board did not wish to interfere if it desired to arrange for another contractor.
WEST COAST. ii; Hokitika School Fence.—Re Mr F. J. Andrews’ application for replacement of fence between school site and his property. In company with Mr Wild and the Chairman and Secretary of the School Committee, 1 inspected this fence and it is in a very bad state of repair, the trouble being that cattle can wander through on to the adjoining sections belonging to private persons. The Committee suggest that o chains ot board fence be erected. At present the Committee are clearing this site as the Head Teacher intends using it for experimental: plots. If this proposal we o crfried out it would require a drain through the section which would have to cross Sale Street. The cost of Bin pipes and material to cvobb under this street would be approximately £". It is the Committee’s intention to carry out this work under the Unemployment Scheme. v Mananui School.—At this school the repairs' are now in hand and will be finished during the week. Mnrsden School.—The iron on the roof of this school, also barge boards, has been attended to.
Classroom Windows. . A' circulalr memorandum was received from the Department reading as follows: “The question outlie height of classroom windows has been receiving consideration, and in this connexion I have to say that the Minister has directed that the bottom of the sashes of the lighting windows in classrooms is to be not more than 2ft 6in from the floor, and that windows of the Whitney type are to. b e used wherever possible. 1 shall be glad, therefore if your Board will in all buildings erected in the future provide that the height and type of the sashes be in .accordance with the Minister’s direction. The Whitney type of window has proved to be quite satisfactory both from the opint of view of lighting and ventilation.” The report was adopted. Terms and Holidays. The following arrangements were made regarding school terms and holidays in 1932: —Schools reopen on Monday, February Ist, 1932. First term: Monday, February Ist to May 6th (14 weeks). Vacation: Two weeks. Second term: Monday, May 23rd, to August 19th (13 weeks). Vacation: Two weeks. Third term: Monday, September sth to December 16th (15 weeks). Vacation: Six weeks and two days. Schools reopen on Wednesday, February Ist, 1933. The arrangements were approved.
