PAYMENT UNDER AWARD.
EMPLOYMENT AT TALKIES
WELLINGTON, September 17.
At the joint request of the employers and the . New Zealand Performing Musicians’ / Industrial Association of Workers, the Arbitration Court to-day amended the Dominion performing musicians’ award by adding special provisions for persons employed half-time at talking picture theatres. The new clauses provide that, in theatres where talking films are used, musicians may be employed for a period of one and a quarter hours, finishing not later ' than 9.15 p.m., fd? each of six weekly performances, at a minimum rate of £2 a week. In the case of theatres where less than /four performances are. shown each week, pro rata rates are to be paid for. .each performance.- - All extra performances will be paid at pro rata rates. In theatres showing daily, where musicians are employed for less than six performances each week, they are to be paid not less than. £2va week. Performing musicians, directing-; orchestras comprising not fewer than six persons shall receive 15s a week, and where an orchestra consists of more than three and fewer, than six persons, *los a week, in addition to thq above rates. Leading violinists in an orchestra of six or more shall receive not less than 5s a week additional. Pictures theatres where silent films are substantially staged are covered by the general provisions of the award.
In theatres where talking films are used and musicians are required for more than one and a quarter hours a night, their employment will be governed by the general provisions of the award. •' '
