.. LONDON, September 12. The. death hasv occurred ,qi Jem Smith, well known in the as a bare-knuckle pugilist. Jem Smith held the championship of the world. in 1885, when he beat J, ac k Davis for £IOO a side. He won . the championship of England in -the same •fight. In 1887 he met Jake Ivilram, in France, for the championship and a purse of £2OOO, the first big purse. After a long fight a draw was agreed to. The next year there was another draw between two other fighters, and in 1889 Jem Smith had his last attempt at’ the championship, when he met Frank P. Slavin. The match was for the world title, the English title, and a purse of £SOO a side. It was fought in Bruges on December 23. Again the result was not absolutely definite, for it was declared a draw in favour of Slavin.
