LONDON, September 13. The South Nottingham Labour Party have called on Mr Holford Knight, K.C., Labour 31. P., to resign his seat lor South Notts forthwith. The Party are arranging for a- new candidate.
LORD INCHCAPE. A CONVERT TO PROTECTION. LONDON, September 13. Lord Inchcape, who has been a. lifelong free trader, writing to “The Mail,” says that he does not hesitate, in view of the conditions under which Britain at present finds herself, to admit the financial expediency of a tariff lor the protection of British industry and agriculture.
RETRENCHMENT POLICY. FOR LOCAL. BODIES. RUGlvi’, September 13. The Ministry of Health has issued a circular to the local Government authorities, stating the importance that the, Government attaches to a careful study of local expenditure'. The Government does not contemplate the local authorities embarking on an ill-con-sidered course of cutting’their expenditure, but it suggests a detailed survey of the whole of the local expenditure, with a view to deciding if full value is being obtained for the money spent, and whether the development of the services cannot safely and 'properly be slowed down till better times.
