There was brutal violence displayed, many passersby being flung dowra and savagely beaten. Prosperous citizens sitting in cafes deemed to approve of the disorders. Fifty roughs were arrested hut most escaped laughing derisively at the •authorities, shouting “perish Judah’s happy New Year.”
