SENT TO BORSTAL,

(By Telegraph-’-’Per Frest Attoeiation) AUCKLAND, September 14. Five young Maoris, who, it. was stated, had banded themselves .under the name of “Carson Brothers, the Outlaws,” were sent to Borstal by Justice Herdman. They had pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking and entering at Kaikohe. The Judge said they seemed to have been making a study of bushranging literature.

ARSON ADMITTED. AUCKLAND, September 14. Charles Vernon, 55, tailor, who admitted setting fire to a block of flats owned by him, was sentenced by Justice Herdman to-day to five years reformative detention.

“People appear to be under a belief that it is not a serious matter to defraud an insurance company,” said the Judge. “I have no doubt that the crime of arson is frequently committed. In nine cases out of ten the offender escapes. •In this case, if the tfire had taken a proper hold, possibly lives would have been lost. The excuse that prisoner was in financial difficulties was no excuse.”

RIX WINS APPEAL

TO BE RELEASED

WELLINGTON, September 14,

The judgment of the Full Court in the case of His Majesty against Edward Walter Rix, heard on 10th July was delivered by Mr Justice MacGregor to-day. The Court held _ that the proceedings taken aga:nst Rix before Justices at Whakatane and before the Supreme Court at Auckland, had been taken without jurisdiction, and must be set aside. Rix accordingly will be released.

FOUND DEAD.' WELLINGTON, September 14. Roland Townsend Burfoot was found dead in an outhouse' in Manchester 'Street, Petone, with a wound in the throat, and a razor beside h/m. Deceased was single, aged 50, had been engaged on relief works. No explanation is put forward to account for his action. '
