The necessity for a medical practitioner to be stationed in South Westland is recognised and the Department is prepared to continue to subsidise through your Board the annual subscription of £2OO and I trust the Boai d will continue its contribution less the 10 per cent cut, I should be g.ftd, however, to have your assurance on the matter to enable the Hon. Minister to reply to Mr Nolan. Copy of letter sent by Mr Nolan to Minister of Health: —

As we have Dr. Bell now in a very nice cottage, newly built and being 70 miles from Hokitika is a great boon to both assisting settlement and making our settlement very stable. We received word from, the Hokitika Hospital Board that 10 per cent, cut was to be applied to the doctor’s salary as from Ist May' last and were we entitled to any rebate on our *.zoo subscribed as our contract was a yearly one from Ist September 1930 to Ist September 1931, from the Board, and what amount we will have to find this year so as to meet your grant. However we would like to hear roni you and any information' wilt be very "helpful. ! Received. The Secretary stated he had replied to the Minister stating the Board had not discussed the matter of a discontinuance of the medical officer in South Westland, and that as long as the South Westland Cdm“ niittw -continued • their contribution the medical officer would be maintain* ed.

In connection with the request for consideration in connection with the ten per cent, cut, the Board' resolved that the request was a fair oiie and that the request for a ten per cent, reduction be accepted. Air Evenden asked how the Committee at Kumara was affected in connection -with the ten per cent. cut. Mr Duff said the. Kumara Median Officer had a residence free of cost while th e doctor .at Matainui paid £1 per week.

From Department, of Health, Wellington in reference to return of antitoxin, stating that not having been returned in the proper time, it could not be renewed. —Received, copy to be. sent to. Dr. Bell at Alatainui.

From General Development Company, New York, expressing appreciation of the address presented to Air Radford (already published). —Received.

AI. .Houston, Three Alile, tendering her resignation as probationer at Westland ’ Hospital:—Received ;'Mr Davidson moved that the resignation 'be accepted with regret, seconded by Air Heenan and carried. From Air and Mrs J. Freitas, asking for annual leave.—Received; request granted. • SPECIAL COMMITTEE’S REPORT. AVe have the honour to report having conferred with our Surgeon Superintendent on the question of the training of nurses' anesthetic fees and X-Ray fees, operation fees and Bacterial Laboratory Charges.

Training of Nurses. —The Surgeon Superintendent stated that he was giving the Senior Nurses one lecture per week and the same to the Junior Nurses. The Matron was giving the Junior Nurses one lecture per week, and demonstrations weekly. There must be daily study by the Nurses, also time off for recreation. The Surgeon Superintendent repeated the Nurses would get the necessary lectures, much depended on their individual endeavour to enable them to pass the necessary exams;

Anesthetics.—He would 'recommend the charges be £1 Is per operation any assistance for anesthestics £1 Is.-X-Ray Fees.- —From £1 Is to £4 4s according to the scale operations. £1 Is for the first .half-hour and £1 I 3 for each succeeding hour or portion of hour. |

Bact. Lab. Specimens.—Prom 10/6 to £3 3s according to scale.. Quite recently the Surgeon Superintendent reported having to send a patient for X-Ray to Grey month for a special plate. He would recommend the purchase of a grid for the X-Ray. The wood work could be done here, lie could get quotations and submit them to the Board, also quotations for screen grid. Your committee would recommend these various items ,<>r your consideration and approval.

Received. Tile scale of lees was agreed to on the motion of Messis Duff and Davidson, public notification to be given. .The formal motion in connection with the Bank overdraft was agreed to on the motion of the Chairman, seconded bgy Mr Duff.

MATRON’S REPORT. .

I hereby submit the following report Nursing Staff.—Probationers Mayo, and Cameron commenced duties 2-9-31. Nurse Downey, annual holidays'9-9-31. Nurse Houston resigned after serving 2 years o L her 4 year course. 1 wou.d nave been pleased to see her finish her training. However she has resigned and leaves of her own accord. Domestic Staff. —-W. Smyth relieved W. Ziegier whilst on annual holidays. 0. Dunn relieved Joe Freitas whilst on annual leave. L. Wylie on annual holidays. J. Downes relieving in laundry. Miss May Dennison on sick leave.

1 wish ,to thank Mrs J. Preston and members of the Jockey Club Dance Committee for gift of cakes. —Received.

REPORTS. From Medical Superintendent reporting on August Ist there were 30 patients in Westland Hospital. Admitted during month, 19 males, 18 females. Total treated 67. Discharged cured 16 males, 19 females —35. Remaining iii hospital on 31st August, 'lB, males, 14 females—32. In hospital for two months, 6 males, 5 females —11. —Received.

The Treasurer reported receipts £lll6/8/6; payments £754/10/8; debit balance .£lOl/11/B.—Received. Accounts amounting to £4lO/19/3 were passed for payment. .

GENERAL. It was- resolved to purchase 50 or 60 sheep for the institution, Mr Davidson to arrange. From Director of Health forwarding copy of Dr. Moore’s report on Westland Hospital.—Received. The Chairman moved a very hearty vote of thanks to the ladies committee who arranged the Hospital Ball.. They had made a wonderlul success .returning £166/4/8 as a result of their effort.' Seconded by Mr Davidson and carried. ‘ 1 ' '

Mr Duff urged that action be taken to urge the Government to amend the Compensation Act' to ‘make it compulsory for 1 payment of hospital charges out of compensation awards. Seconded by/’Mr Davidson and- carried. Tile next meeting was fixed for October 12th.
