N.Z. UNEMPLOYED
CHANGE OF CONTROL URGED. (By Telegraph—ter Press Association) DUNEDIN, September 12. The Chamber of Commerce here has sent a letter to the Prime Minister and Minister of Labour, pointing out that there is continued waste-ui expenditure upon unemployment 1 e id works, and suggesting that the’unemployed should be placed under tne jurisdiction of the Pub.ic Works Department, which could classi y the men, and place as many . as possible upon piece work, WATERSIDERS HIT. CHRISTCHURCH, September 13. Waterside workers in Lyttelton have been affected by altered tiade conditions. During the last two months there has been a large decrease in the quantity of cargo handled on the waterfront. Formerly the weekly wages paid to railway water-, side workers amounted to nearly £IOOO. Now the amount has dropped to between £3OO and £4OO. As the watersiders generally receive about three times the amount paid to the railway waterside workers it is considered that their wages must have dropped proportionately. It is reported that a number of tneii, who have received only a small average wage, have now given up waterfront work and gone on the relief work in Christchurch.
