On Friday, fire swept through the Westport Coal Company’s afforestation area at Fairdown, havoc bring wrought amongst the young trees, which weie making a forward showing. Mr Neumann made an effort to suppress the fire in the early stages, and later his son and other residents joined in, hut the drying wind made the grass and rushes easy prey to the fire, which travelled quickly over the ground, destroying the young and promising trees in its path.

The funeral of the late Mrs W. McLeod took place on Saturday afternoon and was attended by a large following of friends. The service at the residence was conducted by Rev. G. Knowles Smith and Ensign Board, and at the graveside by Rev. G. Naylor. Many beautiful floral tributes were placed on the .grave from sorrowing friends.

Word has been received of the death somewhat suddenly at Wellington last week of Miss Catherine Keating. The late-Miss Keating was a well known resident of this town and up to her departure to take up her residence in Wellington was attached to the staff of St. Mary’s Presbytery. She was an enthusiastic worker in all Church matters and the news of her death will be received with regret by a large circle of friends.
A quiet, but pretty wedding was celebrated in St. John’s Anglican Church, Westport on Saturday,, when Dr Hooper of 'Millerton, was married to Miss Reid of Wellington. The Rev. Bloyce was the officiating clergyman, and Mr Rudgewood, of Westport, acted as best man. The bride was given away by her father. A sumptuous wedding breakfast was provided at Paul’s Club Hotel. The happy couple left later for Lake Rotoiti on their honeymoon.
At the Supreme .Court at Westport on Friday before Mr Justice Adams W. A. Conlon and L. Wicken of Reefton, appealed from the decision of the Magistrate in connection with a case against the Black water Mines in regard to medical services. The statement of claim set out that 117 persons had been attended and a fee of £1 each was required. Judgment was reserved. An appeal was lodged by Wilfred Thomas Slee against the decision given by the Magistrate in the case Slee v. Hunter. The amount involved was £52 10s and costs, a total of. £93 3s 3d. His Honour allowed the appeal and ordered that the case bo remitted to the Magistrate’s Court to enter jugment for plaintiff for £52 10s and costs. Costs of the appeal £lO 10s were allowed.

H. !R. Fell at St. John’s Church, 'Greymouth. The bride was given away by her father, and was fc.ttired in an ankle-length frock of ivory crepe-de-chine, with a tight-fitting ’’bodice and a fully flared skirt, , her veil of tulle fell from a coronet of orange blossoms and she carried a bouquet of freesias and maindenhair fern. Miss Isobel Rouse, the bridesmaid, wore a frock of rose taffetta, with a pale green felt hat, and carried a bouquet of abultanas and maidenhair fern. Ruth Rouse, niece of the bride, was flower girl, wearing a salmon pinksatin frock and carried a basket of spring flowers. Mr J. Rouse was best man.
